Melvin Thomas Baltimore, Maryland
I’m an artist who builds elegant furniture with subtle details that reward patient observation. I mine art history, the global furniture record and local architecture in search of odd cues to influence new features of my work.
Wood is my material of choice for its strength, workability, chaos, and variety of beautiful brown hues. I combine power-tool processes, and hand-tool work to expand my formal possibilities at the workbench. Small imperfections and hand-tool marks show evidence of my hand.
All of my furniture is finished with non-toxic oil-wax blends or non-toxic linseed oil paints that are easy to repair throughout the lifetime of the piece. The oil-wax finishes allow the pieces to develop a patina from daily use and exposure.
